Churches in Britain and Ireland.
High resolution old and contemporary photographs of Places of Worship in the county of Anglesey (Sir Fôn) in North Wales, part of the United Kingdom.
Anglesey, Penmon Priory, Church and Dovecote - an ancient place of worship on the Isle of Anglesey.
This is doubtless the most complete high resolution photographic record of Anglesey Churches on the internet, and I have enjoyed photographing many of the interiors of these places of worship, in addition to the exteriors, and also some of the interesting artefacts and tombstones.
The island of Anglesey - Ynys Môn - has a greater number of ancient monuments (burial chambers, standing stones etc) than any other place in Europe. Similarly, on Anglesey, there are many churches that stand on the same ground where there has been a religious building or christian cell since the 4th, 5th, and 6th centuries.
It is interesting to note that the period in British history that is known to the english as the Dark Ages is known to the welsh as the Golden Age of Saints.
In the early days of religion, churches were seldom built of stone, not least because periodically they would be subject to e.g. Viking raids on churches that would plunder and destroy churches.
During the mid 19th century there was a lot of money made available to repair, rebuild, or abandon and build new churches - probably in an effort to combat the rise of non-conformism. Some of the most interesting churches are in fact the abandoned ones, and for that reason I will be including them on this website.
Click on a place name in either of the colmunns to view high resolution photographs of Anglesey's places of worship. Alternatively, look for a church or chapel using the search box at the top of this page.
Anglesey, Rhosmeirch, Ebenezer Chapel - founded in 1749
The above chapel at Rhosmeirch - Ebenezer Chapel - is the first and therefore the oldest chapel on Anglesey, and it is still in regular use.
Not just a photo of the outside of your Church, but also of the people that use it, of the interior, and even of the graveyard and the more interesting graves.
In addition, if you want
to tell us about your special Church, then we will display your story,
so as every visitor may learn and appreciate what your Church is
